CLEARING THE WAY FOR BANKSIDE YARDS REDEVELOPMENT
Developer Native Land appointed McGee to carry out the structural demolition of Ludgate House, located next to Blackfriars Bridge in the London Borough of Southwark.
The works included the deconstruction and demolition of the existing 173,633 sqft, 10-storey 1980’s commercial building – commencement of this stage of the works signified the first stage of Native Land’s 1.4m sq ft Sampson and Ludgate redevelopment.
Close to 90% of waste was diverted from landfill during the Ludgate House demolition works.
The demolition phase of works was recognised with a Bronze Award at the 2018 Considerate Constructors Scheme’s National Site Awards for achieving high standards in all areas of the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice across Appearance, Community, Environment, Safety, and Workforce.
McGee to carry out the £35m basement contract on the site of Ludgate House, forming part of the major works to deliver the first phase of Bankside Yards, the 1.4m sq ft redevelopment project adjacent to Blackfriars Station (South).
As part of our integrated delivery solution, we are now undertaking the basement works which we expect to complete in mid-2020. The commencement of the basement works marks the first phase of construction works at Bankside Yards.
McGee was awarded the demolition contract on neighbouring Sampson House in December 2018. Together, Ludgate House and Sampson House form a redevelopment project known as Bankside Yards.
The scheme will create a destination neighbourhood comprising cultural, retail and leisure amenities as well as new office space and housing which will be linked by extensive public open spaces. It will reconnect the space between the Tate Modern and one of London’s major transport hubs, Blackfriars Station. The London Borough of Southwark will also benefit from a substantial contribution towards further housing within the Borough.
