A sensitive demolition in the heart of Covent Garden
McGee is currently undertaking the demolition of a series of buildings located between Mercer Street and Langley Street in the heart of Covent Garden. Once completed, the work will help to facilitate planned enhancements to the area, which will include the creation of a new street, along with new residential and retail accommodation and restaurant units.
Using specialist 360° excavators, fitted with hydraulic shears and munchers, our highly trained and experienced operational teams will work over a period of 23 weeks to complete the demolition of a central four-storey building, Chertsey Chambers and a number of low level warehouse-type buildings.
The historic 19th century warehouse, located at 13-14 Langley Street is also to be redeveloped; therefore this building will be simply soft stripped back to the original structure.
The scope of works also includes archaeological attendance for the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS), underpinning, temporary works, concrete surgery, excavation, piling and asbestos removal.
Due to the site being located within close proximity to a variety of neighbours, including the famous Pineapple Dance Studios, great emphasis is being put on neighbourhood liaison and environmental monitoring.
The works are scheduled to conclude in early 2015 where the site will be handed over to the follow-on trades.
