How did you find out about McGee?
I found out about McGee through an internship programme at my University, Texas A&M. I received a scholarship which allowed me to come to London and work with McGee.
What have you learnt since being at McGee?
So I’ve been shadowing the project engineer, Harry Senior. He’s been great and patient with me and has taught me so many things in regard to learning how to navigate problems when they arise.
What do you see as the key differences between our industry in the UK compared to the US?
I’d say one of the major differences in the UK is that sustainability is super important here, the fact there are protocols in place to measure carbon and stuff is cool because they don’t really have that in the US. Also, there are a lot of more historical buildings which require permits to work on if they’re listed that’s something new I learnt whilst being here. Lastly, there are actually places where there are unexploded bombs which means permits are needed to check the that the ground is safe to start construction/ demolition on.
So, you’re studying construction science, what does that entail?
Constructions science is based around project management but covers all angles, so it focuses on how to appropriately manage all fields from engineering, construction and other areas in the industry.
What’s your least favourite part about working in the UK?
I think it’s hard to say because I actually love the UK and would definitely come back here to work and live but I think the weather is probably one of the worst things, it’s always so cold here and the pollution is also really bad I’m not used to it. I think TFL is convenient but it’s also not nice being so close to people on one compact carriage.
Lastly, what’s your take on the food on offer in the UK?
I actually tried Thai food for the first time, chicken noodles. It was delicious. I also tried Nando’s which was super nice.
