Building Information Modelling (BIM)
We use Building Information Modelling (BIM) to generate and manage crucial information to create the best outcomes – from tender through to project delivery and handover.
Throughout a project’s lifecycle, every aspect of the built asset is captured, providing our clients with the information required to see exactly how the project will develop, and ultimately being given the power to choose the most optimal solution and making more informed decisions.
Our BIM expertise ensures improved safety, increased efficiencies and value for money for our clients – whilst also contributing to the continual improvement of the overall standard of building information.
We build our projects in the virtual environment, both in 3D and 4D, using software including Revit, Navisworks and Design Review. This guarantees an accurate virtual building construction, finding many of the method related challenges and de-risk the programme. 4D sequencing allows us to better manage the project on site, improving the accessibility of information to everyone involved and promoting collaboration from the client and architect to the engineers and contractors.
As a specialist contractor at the forefront of innovation within the construction industry, we are proud to have established an in-house capability for the use of virtual and augmented reality.
We use Microsoft’s HoloLens, which officially launched in the UK in 2016, to merge real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualisations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real-time.
To support and advance design reviews and coordination meetings, McGee can host interactive meetings. Wearing HoloLens headsets, users can zoom in on and rotate the BIM model, allowing any areas of concern to be fully explored and interrogated in real-time. This capability greatly increases understanding of particularly challenging interfaces that may not be readily apparent in the traditional 2D design information.
The model files can also be presented at 1:1 scale and co-ordinated to locate the exact location of the proposed building. This would allow future M&E installations, for example, to be presented in a digital form and assessed against penetrations in RC works to validate design coordination and reduce potential rework.
Integrating HoloLens with the ‘Synchro’ software allows us to provide the 4D capability. This ensures that sequencing methodology and programme assumptions can be reviewed in a much greater level of detail than ever before. Linking the project programme to model files provides real-time programme updates, ensuring high quality and accurate progress reporting.
The ability to actively engage with these systems enables not only a high level of design coordination prior to construction, but realises site-specific benefits in terms of communication and gaining a full understanding of the project prior to going live.
Historically, most site-based forms and processes were printed documents completed to meet regulatory or company policies. Our paper records were hard to control, index and search and provided an opportunity for shortcuts to be created, whilst only providing a view on compliance at a moment in time.
Since 2015 we have created around 130 integrated mobile applications. We have delivered an almost complete digital transformation of all standard forms, but more importantly we now have the tools to analyse, disseminate and utilise the data to improve upon safety culture, compliance and expediency of information that has led to more fact-based decision making to improve the operational processes far greater than any traditional methodology could achieve. The by-product of this efficiency, apart from meeting all the regulatory and policy requirements, has given back vital time to focus on delivering safely in the field.
All applications can be accessed and data captured via a simple smartphone or tablet.
