A sensitive demolition and extensive façade retention project located in the heart of Chelsea
Manresa Road, located in the heart of Chelsea, is an historic building which was formerly a hospital.
So that an exclusive development of sixteen luxurious apartments and one villa could be constructed by the developer, McGee provided a range of decontamination, demolition and civil engineering services. This involved all demolition works and extensive groundworks; including the design and installation of a 300 metre length of secant piled wall, 250t of temporary steel flying shores and the excavation of 40,000m3 for a new basement car park.
Although the façade was retained through the installation of a bespoke structural steel frame support system that ran the full 100 metre length of the building, the developer had plans for a strikingly modern rear elevation. The retained façade required the extensive temporary works to support the structure prior to incorporation into the main building. The façade support was situated on a series of mini-piles which were constructed in a restricted working area.
Due to the sensitive residential location of the project, including an adjacent school, McGee maintained strict noise, vibration and dust monitoring throughout the life of the project.
